Photographic analysis

What is this ?

This involves the systematic visual recording of paper and parchment materials in order to define a conservation-restoration strategy. The photographs also serve to illustrate the restoration report.

Its goal?

This report aims to provide an objective reference point, essential before any physical manipulation or remedial intervention. The photographs document the surface condition, structural alterations, and signs of wear, allowing for monitoring the substrate's evolution over time and justifying future technical choices. This documentation follows a rigorous approach, combining overall views and detailed macro shots.

She highlights:

Photographic analysis of the paper highlights several critical parameters:

  • Texture and Grain: Observation of the fibrous structure, the presence of felt or plant fibers, as well as the grain orientation.

  • Chemical Alterations: Highlighting areas of yellowing, browning (oxidation) or blueing, often linked to the acidity of the support or the quality of the ink.

  • Physical Defects: Precise identification of tears, perforations, marked creases, moisture or mold stains, and deformation of the support (warping, undulation).

  • Previous Interventions: Identification of past restorations (reinforcing parchments, adhesives, bonding) and their state of aging.

The photographic report clearly distinguishes natural alterations to the support from past human interventions. It highlights the compatibility of materials used in previous restorations (adhesives, inks, reinforcing supports) and assesses their impact on the artwork's long-term stability. This analysis is crucial to avoid repeating technical errors or using incompatible materials.

In conclusion,

The photographic documentation provided is an essential diagnostic tool. It allows us to:

  • Establish a precise inventory of the defects and their location.

  • Define a hierarchy of priority interventions.

  • Ensure traceability of conservation actions.

  • To serve as a basis for risk assessment and work planning.
